Land Excursions from Soma Bay

Quads, buggies and camels inland

Quads, buggies and camels inland

Away from the water, the land behind Soma Bay is open desert, with the Red Sea Mountains further inland. A driver meets you at your hotel and takes you off the peninsula to the start of the safari. The classic ride is about 50 km on an automatic quad to a Bedouin village, where a camel ride and tea are waiting. For more speed, the Mega Desert Safari mixes the quad with a dune buggy and a 4x4 Jeep.

After sunset, or a day with dolphins

After sunset, or a day with dolphins

Three safaris carry on after sunset. The Super Desert Safari and the quad safari with dinner finish with a BBQ meal and an Oriental show, and the stargazing trip adds a professional telescope. With children, head north instead: Dolphin World in Hurghada offers a dolphin and walrus show or the show plus a swim with dolphins, and the Grand Aquarium has a walk-through tunnel with sharks, rays and turtles.

Slides in Makadi Bay and horses by the sea

Slides in Makadi Bay and horses by the sea

Makadi Water World lies in Makadi Bay, on the road between Soma Bay and Hurghada, and a full day there means more than 50 slides and attractions, lunch and soft drinks. Riders can join a guided horse trip along the beach and into the desert, open to beginners. Each of these trips starts and ends at your Soma Bay hotel. Pack closed shoes and a scarf for the desert, and look on the tour page for the age rules.
